Sylvia Earle

“Her Deepness”

“Her Deepness” is the title Sylvia Earle has earned after a life spent underwater, sometimes in places where no human being has ever ventured before. The famous marine biologist has devoted her life to exploring and preserving the depths of the oceans.

In 1970, while working as a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, she headed one of the Tektite II missions, a programme co-financed by NASA. Together with four other scientists and divers, all women, Earle spent 14 days in an underwater habitat in the US Virgin Islands at a depth of 15 metres.

To combat the rapid degradation of the world's oceans, Earle founded Mission Blue in 2009, the main aim of which is to develop a network of protected marine areas in all the world's seas. Rolex has supported this mission since 2014.

David Doubilet

27,000 hours under the sea

Photographer David Doubilet has dedicated his life to the oceans, capturing through his lens the action, drama and poetry that lie beneath the surface. This pioneer in his field began his career in 1962 at the age of 16, when underwater photography was still in its infancy.

Over more than 60 years, he has spent some 27,000 hours underwater and developed new methods of shooting, such as the split field technique, which allows images to be captured above and below the water level simultaneously.

Doubilet is a tireless witness to the beauty of the aquatic world. Through his work, he raises public awareness of the absolute necessity of preserving its wonders. His photographs represent one of the most striking and effective pleas for the preservation of the underwater world.
